Getting There

By Air

If you’re the type who likes to take to the skies, Bornholm’s got you covered. The easiest way to reach this Baltic gem is via Bornholm Airport, just a stone’s throw from Rønne. With regular flights from Copenhagen, you can hop on a plane and be soaking in those island vibes in under an hour. The flight is short but sweet, giving you just enough time to daydream about the adventure that awaits.

By Ferry

For those who prefer a more nautical approach, set your sights on the ferries. There’s something undeniably romantic about arriving by sea, watching the island grow on the horizon. Ferries run from Køge, Ystad, and Sassnitz, connecting Bornholm to mainland Denmark, Sweden, and Germany. The crossing from Ystad, Sweden, is the most popular and offers a quick, scenic journey. Whether you’re bringing a car or going on foot, the ferry is a great way to start your Bornholm adventure with a splash.

Find your ferry tickets at Bornholmslinjen

By Train and Bus

If the idea of a classic rail journey tickles your fancy, then grab a train to Ystad, Sweden. From Copenhagen, the journey takes a couple of hours, offering up picturesque views of the Danish countryside. Once you reach Ystad, the ferry terminal is just a short walk from the train station, making for a seamless transition from rails to sails.

Alternatively, buses from Copenhagen to Ystad provide a budget-friendly option (I got my ticket for 159 DKK). It’s less glamorous but gets the job done. From there, it’s a straight shot across the water to Bornholm.

Find your bus tickets at Kombardo Expressen

By Car

For the road warriors out there, driving to Bornholm can be part of the adventure. From Copenhagen, head to Ystad and catch the ferry. The drive is straightforward, and having your own wheels on the island gives you the freedom to explore every nook and cranny at your own pace. Just remember to book your ferry ticket in advance – summer can get busy!

Looking for a rental car? DiscoverCars has a wide range of options for you.

Tips for the Journey

  • Book Ahead: Especially in peak season. Flights and ferries can fill up quickly.
  • Travel Light: If you’re hiking the coastal path, pack smart. Less is more.
  • Enjoy the Ride: Whether by air, sea, or land, getting to Bornholm is part of the adventure. Take it all in.

Each route offers its own unique prelude to the adventure that lies ahead. So, choose your path, savor the journey, and let the excitement build as you approach this Baltic haven. Bornholm is waiting, and it’s going to be epic.

Designing Your Route

Bornholm Coastal Path: Ultimate Hiking Guide
Bornholm Coastal Path: Ultimate Hiking Guide

Clockwise Route

Description: Embarking on the Bornholm Coastal Path in a clockwise direction means starting from Rønne and heading north towards Hasle, eventually making your way around the island back to Rønne. This route lets you ease into your adventure, giving you a taste of Bornholm’s variety right from the start.

Pros:

  • Ease into the Adventure: Starting from Rønne, you’ll gradually build up to the more challenging northern sections. It’s like a slow burn that builds into a spectacular climax.
  • Hit the High Notes Early: Within the first days of hiking, you’ll reach Hammerknuden with its dramatic cliffs and the iconic Hammershus Castle, setting the tone for the rest of your hike. It’s like skipping the meal and going straight for dessert — don’t we all want to do that?
  • Best for Logistics: Rønne is the main transport hub, making it easier to start and finish your journey with minimal hassle.

Cons:

  • Crowds at the End: The southern beaches, particularly Dueodde, can get crowded. Ending your hike in a busy area might not be the peaceful finish you envisioned.
  • Wind Patterns: You might find yourself hiking against the prevailing winds in some sections, which can be tiring.
Bornholm Coastal Path: Ultimate Hiking Guide
Bornholm Coastal Path: Ultimate Hiking Guide

Anti-Clockwise Route

Description: Setting off in an anti-clockwise direction means kicking off your adventure with the stunning beaches and dunes of Dueodde, moving towards the more rugged northern landscapes.

Pros:

  • Chill Start: Jump straight into the beauty of Dueodde Beach. It’s flat for a long time, but it’s a stunning start that sets a high bar for the rest of your journey.
  • Wind at Your Back: More often than not, you’ll have the wind at your back, making the hike a bit easier on those long stretches.
  • Gradual Descent: As you finish in Rønne, you’ll descend from the rugged cliffs, giving your tired legs a gentler end to the adventure.

Cons:

  • Tough Switch: Starting with the relatively easier southern sections might make the sudden switch to the challenging northern cliffs more jarring.
  • Logistics: You might face logistical challenges with accommodation availability if you don’t plan ahead, as many hikers start from Rønne.

Extra Tips for Designing Your Route

  • Flexible Itinerary: Build some flexibility into your schedule. Weather changes, unexpected discoveries, or simply the need for a rest day can alter your plans.
  • Food and Supplies: Plan your food stops. While towns and villages are scattered along the path, some stretches are remote. Stock up on essentials when you can.
  • Trail Conditions: Check the latest trail conditions. Local tourist offices and the Shelter app often have updates on any closures or hazards.
