- Access: You can either start this XTERRA Moorea Trail through the backyard of a place called Tropical Garden or start at the iconic Pineapple Fields of Moorea. I cover this in greater detail in the How To Get There section.
Trail Description
Hiking the XTERRA Moorea Trail is an adventurous journey featuring challenging terrain. You’ll navigate a mix of steep climbs, rugged paths, and dense forest trails.
Scenic Highlights
- Views of Opunohu Bay: Even though most of this hike takes place in thick vegetation, you will be able to catch glimpses of the stunning Opunohu Bay on a few occasions.
- Tropical Flora and Fauna: The XTERRA Moorea Trail winds through lush vegetation, including hibiscus, breadfruit trees, and various types of ferns, highlighting the island’s diverse plant life. The trail offers occasional sightings of local wildlife, such as blue-and-bronze geckos and dragonflies. You may also encounter exotic birds, butterflies, and even wild pigs
- Adventure: The challenging terrain and thrilling sense of adventure make this hike a memorable experience and one of my personal favorites in Moorea.
Essential Tips for XTERRA Moorea Trail
- Wear sturdy shoes with a good grip. Your butt and coccyx will thank you on the way down for wearing shoes that make it less likely for you to slip and hurt yourself.
- Stay hydrated. Now that you know this hike exists, you can be more prepared than I was. Bring at least 2 liters of water, preferably more.
- Pack the essentials. A daypack with snacks, first aid supplies, and your camera to capture the stunning scenery, and make sure to have a map or GPS device.
- Begin your hike in the morning to avoid the midday heat and have ample time to complete the hike.
- Respect the Environment: Follow Leave No Trace principles by carrying out all trash and minimizing your impact on the natural surroundings.
- Physical Fitness: Ensure you are in good physical condition, as the hike is demanding and requires endurance and strength.
Safety Precautions

- Communication: Inform someone of your hiking plans, including your expected return time, to ensure your safety.
- Stay on the Path: Stick to marked trails to avoid getting lost or encountering unsafe terrain.
- Local Resources: Consult local resources or guides for current trail conditions and safety recommendations.
- First Aid Kit: Carry a basic first aid kit for minor injuries.

How to get there
The XTERRA Moorea Trail is a one-way trail, making it possible to start at two different locations. Decision point: Tropical Garden or Pineapple Fields?
I’ll describe the two options for you in detail below.
Option 1: Begin at Tropical Garden
Location:
Tropical Garden is situated at the end of a very steep hill, which you’ll encounter, if you take the dirt road across the road from the Snack Chez Fifi.
This map shows the exact location.
Navigating Tips:
- Restaurant Sign Clues: When you’re on the main road, look for restaurant signs, pointing sharply uphill, including one for Tropical Garden — an appetizing start to your adventure.
- Ascending the Steep Street: Trek uphill until you reach a house marking the end of the road. Adjacent, a small grassy hill rises to your right, offering a vantage point over the trailhead nestled amidst Moorea’s lush forests.
- Initial Navigational Challenges: Having done the trail from both sides, I find it’s a bit easier to get lost starting from Tropical Garden. Stay alert for XTERRA signs, typically vivid orange or yellow, strategically placed along the route to guide your way.
- Essential Navigation Tool: If you haven’t already, download maps.me—a reliable offline mapping app. Navigate Moorea’s detailed hiking trails, including this one, and track your progress with ease. As a seasoned user, I swear by its accuracy and functionality.
Option 2: Begin at the Pineapple Fields
Location:
These are the coordinates of the beginning of the XTERRA Moorea Trail, starting from the pineapple fields: -17.5201, -149.845009, a serene starting point amidst Moorea’s natural beauty.
This map shows you the trailhead.
Navigating Tips:
- From Opunohu Bay to Route de Ananas: Head towards Route de Ananas from Opunohu Bay. After approximately ten minutes (walking) on the paved road, spot a dirt road to your left — your gateway to the trailhead.
- Crossing the Stream: Prepare for a stream crossing shortly after turning onto the dirt road – prepare for wet feet or take off your shoes. Embrace the possibility of encountering large freshwater eels, a fascinating sight if you’re lucky. Please respect their habitat and refrain from feeding them.
- Navigating the Path: Proceed straight until you can make a left turn. Continue until you spot a forest opening, where another left turn awaits just before a dip in the road. The vegetation here might be a tad overgrown, so keep a sharp eye or you might miss it. Entering the forest, you will be welcomed by an XTERRA sign, confirming you’ve reached the trail’s start.
Transportation Tips
How do I actually get to one of the two trailheads, Sara?
Well, since the XTERRA Moorea Trail is a one-way trek, I’d recommend hitchhiking unless you live within walking distance of either Tropical Garden or the Pineapple Fields.
It’s the only form of transportation I have used to get around French Polynesia, and you typically don’t have to wait very long before someone picks you up. But I’m not you, and you may not feel comfortable doing that, and if so, that’s perfectly fine.
Please use your judgment and hitchhike at your own risk
My experience
The Impromptu Adventure
I’ve got a confession to make: meticulous plans aren’t my style. I’m all about intention and intuition. So, when I woke up one day craving adventure, I texted my crew, “I’m taking a walk in the pineapple fields. Anyone’s welcome to tag along.”
Now, here’s another nugget of truth about me — I’m not one to be shackled by a map. I love to wander and see where the journey takes me. And that, my friends, is how I ended up scrambling up the mountainside of Mount Rotui, the second-highest peak in Moorea.
But let’s rewind for a minute.
The Wrong Turn
Let me set the stage for you. It was a scorching hot day, and the air was thick with humidity as we strolled through fields of juicy pineapples.
Then, we had a choice: keep going straight or take an inviting turn into the forest on our left. I turned, and the rest followed.
To some, this would quickly turn out to be a bad choice. The majority of our squad decided to call it quits and head back within 10 minutes, which was perfectly fine. But four of us couldn’t resist the lure of the unknown.
Mother Nature’s Obstacle Course
This hike was no walk in the park. It felt like Mother Nature’s obstacle course, and she was throwing everything at me; steep ascents, treacherous descent, ropes to cling to, thick vegetation, loose rocks and dirt – this trail had it all.
But this being an impromptu adventure, I had dressed like I was going for a walk in the park; I was sporting cotton shorts that had turned the color of an impending storm, drenched in sweat like I’d been caught in a monsoon. My water bottle was a lifeline, but I had to ration it like a man on a desert island.
A Comrade in Misery
Now, let me tell you about my buddy Valdemar. This guy was in worse shape than me, and that’s saying something. He sported light beige linen pants that had split open from crotch to ass, unveiling deep blue boxers.
I laughed so hard, walking behind him. One of those rare laughs that not only manifests through sound leaving your mouth but also through tears streaming from your eyes. Oh, how it felt good.
Those pants quickly turned see-through from absorbing every drop of sweat, his body had shed along the way. His shoelaces dangled untied, and he’d conveniently left his water bottle at home. But you know what we did? We shared what we had, ’cause that’s what comrades do in the face of an adventure.
The Race Against Daylight
Compared to the sunbaked ridge of Mount Rotui, this hike was a shady oasis thanks to the towering tropical trees overhead. As we trudged on, the sun began its descent, casting a golden glow over the landscape. Sweating like a pig and rationing my water, I pressed on, knowing we had to make it down before darkness fell.
The descent was a test of nerves, with ropes that sometimes proved less reliable than a politician’s promises. At one point one of those ropes decided to give up the ghost while my buddy Rasmus was scaling a steep section. Luckily, nothing happened. But it’s a reminder to always give those ropes a once-over before trusting them with the weight of your body – and essentially your life.
For me, hiking is like entering a trance. My mind quiets down, and my sense of wonder comes alive. The earthy aroma of the jungle, vibrant wildflowers, and sun rays filtering through the canopy created a sensory symphony. Time seemed to slow down until the sinking sun reminded me, we had to make it out before nightfall.
The Welcome Relief
When we finally emerged from the trail at Tropical Garden, we were drenched in sweat and thirsting for water.
Enter Cedric, the guardian angel of Tropical Garden, who graciously offered us water and fruit while we soaked up the amazing views from his premises.
At that moment, Cedric was building a hostel at the end of the steep street, so keep that in mind if you need a place to crash in Moorea.
Afterthoughts
As I sat in Cedric’s outdoor kitchen, watching a giant cruise ship bathed in the orange and pink shades of the setting sun and munching on a pomelo, I reflected on something I’d written four years ago at the start of my round-the-world trip:
“You can never plan for an adventure, nor can you buy it at some tour company. What truly makes your cells quiver with excitement can never be predictable. Adventure is born when something completely unexpected happens. The moment when a shudder of icy despair runs down your spine, and your mind whispers; ‘was this a bad idea?’ Yet the promise of the uncertain, enchanting future keeps you going. Adventure is facing the unknown. Adventure is taking fear by the hand. Adventure is looking fear straight in the eyes and getting away with it.”
Now go forth, adventurous souls, and embrace the unknown. Sometimes, the best experiences come from getting gloriously lost.
